Welcome to Lit. of Film I - Beginning Film Analysis and Lit. of Film II- Intro to Film Theory

In Literature of Film I you will explore the film making process and how you can understand much more about films if you understand what film makers are doing (cinematography, composition, editing, movement, and sound), and more importantly, WHY. After taking this class, you will no longer be a passive consumer of films and television but an active viewer and critic.

In Literature of Film II we will reinforce what you learned in Lit. of Film I and look deeper into the realm of film history and Film Theory. We will explore such areas as the Pre-Code Era of Film and its impact on the film industry, the Auteur Theory and Genre Theory, among other topics.

Film I

Ch. 1- Photography

In this chapter we will explore the role of the camera and the cinematographer.  We will look at shots, angles, lighting key, camera lenses and more.

Ch.2- Mise en Scene

Mise en Scene, or Composition, is the careful consideration of where objects and people are situated within the frame.  In this chapter we will consider the possible meanings created within the image on the screen and why the director and cinematographer chose to set up each shot as they did.

Ch. 3- Movement

When we discuss Movement, we will be discussing how objects and people move within the frame as well as how the camera moves.  And, more importantly, we will consider why they move in a particular way.

Ch. 4- Editing

Editing is truly where the storytelling of a film takes place. With an infinite amount of possibilities of what an editor can do with a film, we will look at the cadence of scenes, the length of shots, what type of editing is used and why.  Great editing can make a film, and likewise, poor editing can ruin a film.

Ch. 5- Sound

In this chapter we will discuss the incredibly important role that sound plays in film.  From the overall score of a film to the sound effects, sound creates the mood/tone of a film and helps to convey emotion, tension, elation and much, much more.
