Film Studies and Film Production
From the very early days of film production there has been an effort to censor film content. At the beginning of the 1930s, with pressure from conservative and religious groups, the Hays Office was established to create guidelines, known as The Production Code, for directors to follow when making films. This Code was the beginning of censorship in Hollywood and would endure until the late 1960s when it was replaced by the ratings system we are familiar with today.

Here you will find a copy of the original Production Code. It is important to note that the Hays Office had good intentions of protecting the populace from inappropriate content. However, as with most issues of censorship, who decides what is and is not appropriate?
